Throwback Thursday: Empowering Africa’s Future Through STEM – ExxonMobil Foundation’s Local Impact Initiative

Local impact initiatives across the African upstream industry are so much more than philanthropy; they are critical strategies designed to enable long-term local economic benefits, community well-being, educational development and environmental protection.

In 2024, the ExxonMobil Foundation partnered with Junior Achievement Africa to launch the ExxonMobil Foundation STEM Africa Competition, a programme which empowers students across Nigeria, Namibia, Angola, and Mozambique through hands-on STEM education.

It reached more than 3,000 students in its inaugural year, all of whom tackled real-world challenges using science, technology, engineering, and maths as they built the skills that shape their futures and their communities.

The transformative impact of this initiative was justly recognised at this year’s 29th 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀, sponsored by Eni - and it was a true honour for Gayle Meikle to present the Local Impact Award for Driving Positive Change to Katrina Fisher, Country Manager & Managing Director, Angola.
